Americans need to educate their children about what they read, according to author Deborah DeGroff.
“There are a lot of different viewpoints on all of these things, but we have to educate our children. We have to educate them so that they can actually read,” she told program host Dr. Peter Breggin during her July 27 appearance on the Brighteon.TV program “ReFounding America.”
DeGroff, the author of “Between the Covers: What’s Inside a Children’s Book,” had been scrutinizing the contents of books in both libraries and schools for the past three decades. Breggin said his guest discovered the “awful” contents of these books and how they contributed to the “shocking misshaping” of American children.
According to DeGroff, many books targeting readers between the ninth and 12th grade levels are actually written for lower-level readers. This led her to question whether children are truly learning how to read.
“As you dumb the kids down, you add more and more dialogue. You make books simpler and lower reading levels. In fact, there are 17 books for ninth to 12th graders that are written on a first-grade reading level. So the problem is not just the content.”
DeGroff started reading children’s books as a young mother, when her oldest child began to read. Later on, she noted that children’s books from the 1980s had stark differences with the children’s books she had read as a child.
Her curiosity eventually turned to concern as she read more books. This resulted in a lifetime of research and a resounding cry for parents to look into the books their children read.
One topic DeGroff touched on in “Between the Covers” is that of profanity. She told Breggin that free speech protections do not extend to obscenity. However, the communist platform has blurred the lines between censorship and free speech.
To bolster her point, she mentioned that books for young adults that mention the F-word more than a thousand times, alongside other expletives, have been published.
The author and children’s book expert pointed out to Breggin that young adult books already contain depravity. Furthermore, children are being fed ideological messages from as early as their birth through the books they read. These messages – including social justice, climate change and transgenderism – are inappropriate for three- and four-year-old children, DeGroff said.
She mentioned the children’s book “Our House is on Fire” by Jeannette Winter as an example of this indoctrination. The book, which talks about Swedish climate change activist Greta Thunberg, implies to children that adults will not do anything.
“If the grown-ups weren’t doing anything to save the planet, Greta would have to demand change herself,” said a description for the book on Amazon.
DeGroff also cited the existence of children’s books about mask-wearing and a variety of other issues – something she touched on in a September 2021 piece.
“Children are being taught to hate in the name of diversity. Perhaps it is about skin color, whether boys can become girls, whether someone does or does not wear a mask, or whether those 12 or older have been vaccinated the mandated number of times,” she wrote. “The child has learned early that there is only one viewpoint allowed. If their parents are not in agreement with the position the child is learning in school, the child becomes more conflicted.”
Not all is lost, however, as DeGroff reminded parents to consider the target age range of children’s books. This, she added, will help parents better understand the kinds of books their children read.
